Grand Ayatollah Al-Sistani Mourns Pope Francis, Honors Legacy of Interfaith Peace
NAJAF, IRAQ – In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin,
Secretary-General of the Vatican State
Greetings and Respect,
It is with profound sadness that we have received the news of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, the Pope of the Vatican, a personality who held a revered spiritual and moral stature among numerous nations and commanded immense respect from all. Pope Francis played a distinguished role in advancing peace, fostering tolerance, and standing in solidarity with the oppressed and suffering people across the world.
The historic meeting between His Holiness and the Supreme Religious Authority of Shia Islam in Najaf was a truly momentous occasion. During this meeting, both parties emphasized the foundational importance of faith in the Almighty and divine messages, as well as the commitment to high moral values in overcoming the immense challenges faced by humanity today.
They also underscored the vital need for cooperative efforts to promote a culture of peaceful coexistence, to distance from violence and hatred, and to strengthen the values of empathy and unity among people—based on mutual respect, the safeguarding of rights, and honoring the dignity of followers of all religions and ideologies.
While extending his deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the followers of the Catholic Church worldwide for this painful loss, the Supreme Religious Authority prays that they find patience and solace in this time of grief. He also beseeches the Almighty to grant boundless mercy and blessings, bringing peace, goodness, and prosperity to them and to all of humanity.
